THE ELOWEN CHANDELIER

WITH MARGIT WITTIG

The Elowen Chanderlier was born out of founder Sarah Peake’s desire to have something living, organic - almost wild - to act as the centrepiece of an architecturally traditional drawing room. Sarah turned to sculptor and artist Margit Wittig to explore the idea and so began a creative partnership with both closely involved at each stage to bring the concept to life.

The process took two years from concept to completion, with initial sketches becoming a metal Marquette and finally the finished product. Sarah and Margit met frequently throughout either at Margit’s home in Earl’s Court, where she painted each of the pearls that adorn the tips of the branches, or at the workshop in East London where the metal structure was created.

THE COLLABORATION STORY

Every part of the chandelier is hand-crafted, and the branches are connected to glass shades with a ball and socket joint so that each can be angled to suit. The pearls are very much Margit’s trademark, and were hand painted in gilt, sea green, teal blue and silvery tones, but can also come in bespoke colours. Each one is totally unique. The end result is a show-stopper.

A piece that really stands out from its surroundings. The brass, tendril-like branches of the chandelier swirl down from the white plaster ceiling rose, a whimsical contrast between the affirming, straight lines of the Victorian architecture and the irreverent wildness of the chandelier.
